This month we’re making lanterns out of leaves and mason jars!

Included in your kit:

1 mason jar

1 votive candle

leaves

2 oz. mod podge

1 foam brush

jute twine

Instructions:

1.  Prepare your leaves.  You’ll want to remove the plastic veins from the back side of the leaves.  You should also iron the leaves to make them flatter.  All of this will help the leaves stick better to the side of the mason jar.
2. Prepare your jar.  Wash the outside of your jar with soap and water to remove any dirt of grease.  If you have any rubbing alcohol, use a cotton ball to wipe down the outside of the jar.  Again, all this is to help the leaves stick to the jar.
3. Add your leaves.  Use a thin layer of mod podge on the side of the jar just larger than your leaf.  Wait a few minutes until it gets sticky and then add your leaf.  Continue adding leaves around the outside of the jar.
4. Once all the leaves are added, wait for the outside to dry for 15-20 minutes.  The leaves should not be able to move.
5. Add a generous layer of mod podge to the outside of the jar to seal in the leaves.
6. Allow to air dry for a couple of hours until the mod podge is clear.

That’s it!  Light your candle and enjoy!

I absolutely love this time of year. I love the mums and the leaves and especially love the cool breeze. 

We have so many things coming up for October and November.  Our neighbors at the Fairborn Library are having their Terrifying Trivia on October 18th.  Here at BeaverCREEP, we are starting off the spooky season with a Literary Ghost Walk: “We Read Dead People” on October 3rd at 7 p.m.  We also have two spooky movie nights happening after hours on October 16th and October 30th.  

We have musicians scheduled to come to Beavercreek and play for us on the first Saturdays of the month.  On October 4th, we have 3 Rivers Old Time Music and on November 1st, we have Midwestern Mrs.  These are always free and fun performances. We really hope you will come check these musicians out! 

For our teens and children, we have Macabre Makers (Oct 22/Teens) and then Holiday Crafts and Stories (Oct 20) and finally, a Costume Parade (Oct 30).

Hello crafters!  This month we’re making little wooden apples out of unfinished dice.

Included in your kit:

3 unfinished dice

red paint

1 stick

3 leaves

1 paintbrush

1 piece of sandpaper

Not included in your kit:

hot glue

Instructions:

1.  Paint the unfinished dice with a coat of red paint.  Allow to dry and paint a second coat.
2.  Use the sandpaper to distress the edges of the “apples.”
3. Cut the stick into three equal pieces and hot glue to the top of the apples to make the stems.
4. Cut the leaves apart and glue on top of the apples near the stem.  

All finished!  Display them with your other fall decorations!

Hello again, Beavercreek!

It has been a wonderful summer with so many amazing programs and visits from you all.  We love seeing everyone enjoy our library and are so grateful to be wrapping up such a successful Summer Reading Challenge.

It is hard to believe that August and September will so soon be here. It feels like summer break just started and now we are buying school supplies and going school shoe shopping. I want to make sure each parent remembers that we do have free tutors here at the library starting August 27 on Wednesdays from 4-7 and Saturdays from 10-1.  These tutors can help your students from grades K-12.  

In August, we also have our Stuffy Sleepover on August 8 (ages 2-6) and Crossword Contest (adults) on August 9. Paul’s Cool Scales has been rescheduled for August 12 at Peace Lutheran Church. Our Youth and Adult Services departments always do such an excellent job with story times, book clubs and crafts for all ages. To find a calendar of all of our events please follow this link.

For September, Beavercreek will be busy with the Popcorn Festival on the 6th and 7th. If you do not have a yard sign yet, please grab one from our booth at the popcorn festival or at any of your local branches. Teen Fan Fest will also be happening again at the Carol Graff Beavercreek Library on September 13 from 6-8 p.m. This has been a fantastic event for the past three years and we are excited to welcome our Greene County Teens to Beavercreek again.

And last but not least, we will have Chalk the Parks! Where you can do sidewalk chalk at all of your favorite parks surrounding the Beavercreek Library.  This will happen every Tuesday at 3:30 at a different park each week.  We are excited to partner with our parks and show our patrons just a little piece of what makes Beavercreek and Greene County so amazing.

I am so excited for the upcoming Fall season with all of the community events and programs coming up. I love being a part of the Homecoming Parade and all of the community fun!

2 pieces of patriotic fabric

1 piece of batting

sewing machine or thread (if hand sewing)

Instructions:

Take one piece of fabric and layer it right side up on the piece of batting.  

Sew the fabric to the batting in any pattern you like.  I went with a simple X, but you can use any quilt stitch or pattern.

Next, layer the two pieces of fabric right sides together and pin.  Sew around the outside leaving a 3-4 inch open space.

Turn the potholder right side out.  Turn in the edges of the open space and pin closed.

Top stitch all the way around the potholder.  You’re done!

Birdseed

1 straw

1 cookie cutter

1 piece of twine

1 packet gelatin

Instructions:

1. Combine the gelatin and 1/4 cup water in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Keep stirring until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Remove the pan from heat and allow the mixture to cool for one minute. Stir in 3/4 cup birdseed, adding extra as needed until all the liquid is absorbed. (You won’t want to add much more than 1 cup, otherwise there won’t be enough “glue” to bind the birdseed once dried.)
2. Place the cookie cutter on a parchment or waxed paper on a baking sheet. (You can make the ornaments right on the counter, but a baking sheet allows for them to be easily moved aside later.) Fill each ornament to the top with the birdseed mixture making sure to pack it down firmly.
3. Cut a piece off the straw and put it near the top of the ornament to make a hole for the twine to go through.  Allow the ornaments to dry for several hours or overnight. Once completely dried, gently press the ornaments out of the cookie cutters. Remove the straw and thread the twine through the hole.  Hang from a tree for the birds to enjoy!

Hello Beavercreek!

We are so excited for our 2025 Summer Reading Club.  Our annual Kick Off Party on June 2^nd from 12-2pm where we’ll have games, cookies and some animal guests! Summer Reading is my absolute favorite time of the year.  It is wonderful to see so many patrons and families leave with arm loads of books, movies and games. 

Our theme this year is color our world. So look around the library for hints to artists and community expressions.  Along with the artsy theme, we have a Color Run event at Dominick Lofino Park on June 3^rd and a local artist demonstration on June 7^th.  We also have Train Your Dragon Day on June 13^th and the adults have a Cozy Coffee Corner program on June 21^st!

July will be packed as well with Stingrays at Peace Lutheran Church on July 1^st.  We also have a whodunit program titled, “Mona Lisa is Missing,” in this program, you have to find Miss Mona and then you can paint her yourself! (July 19) Our adults have a squeegee art program and a sewing and costuming expert here holding office hours on July 26^th.

The programs I’ve listed above are just a taste of all that we have prepared for you this summer in Beavercreek.  We have worked hard to make this a fun and enriching summer for all of our patrons.

Hello crafters!  This month we are making adorable eggs out of mod podge and napkins!

Included in your kit:

3 white wooden eggs

3 napkins

mod podge

1 paint brush

Instructions:

Separate the decorative layer of the napkin from the plain layer. 

Cut out the designs you want to use.

Put a little bit of mod podge on the egg to hold the napkin piece in place and then apply your design to the egg.  Put a thin layer of mod podge all over the design to adhere it to the egg.

Repeat this process until the egg looks as you want it to.  You can completely cover the egg, or leave some white areas.

Basically, I painted the spindles with two light coats of paint.  After it dried, I used the sandpaper to scuff up the spindles to give them a more rustic look.  I used just a dab of hot glue on the end of the green toppers and put them in the hole at the top of the spindle.  I arranged the spindles in a way I liked and then used just a touch of hot glue to keep them in place.  Lastly, I tied the raffia around them in a bow.  That’s it!
