Hello Beavercreek Community!

Summer Reading starts June 1^st and we are so excited to have everyone here for our Kick-off Party.  Beavercreek’s Summer Reading Kick-off is on June 1 from 12-2 p.m.  We have Jungle Island animals that will be out on our front lawn.  We will also be serving Cake Hope Love cookies – they always give us such fun buttercream cookie shapes! That day, we will also start passing out our SUMMER SWAG.  Our photo spot will be available all summer long where Booker will welcome you into Beavercreek’s Summer Reading Park.  We are so eager to have you here!

June and July will be packed with magicians, animals and fun craft programs.  Our theme is “Unearth a Story” and we have worked extra hard to give you all of the dinosaur puns and programs.  It is always wonderful when a theme attracts such excitement from our librarians – we are so excited to be surrounded by dinosaurs this summer.  Our photo spot will be available all summer long where Booker will welcome you into Beavercreek’s Summer Reading Park.  

As you read this summer, do not forget to come in and claim your prizes.  When you complete your reading, you will be put into a drawing for the grand prize.  Can you tell that we love summer reading?

Included in your kit:

1 unfinished candlestick

1 unfinished birdhouse

1 bottle yellow paint

1 bottle white paint

1 yellow gingham ribbon

Not included in your kit:

sandpaper (optional)

hot glue

Instructions:

1. Paint the candlestick and the roof and base of the birdhouse white.  Allow to dry between coats.
2. Paint the body of the birdhouse yellow.
3. When everything is dry, use sandpaper to distress the candlestick and birdhouse (optional).
4. Glue the birdhouse to the top of the candlestick.
5. Glue the ribbon to the front of the birdhouse above the perch.

Included in your kit:

1 long piece of jute twine

1 short piece of jute twine

1 green gingham ribbon

1 white bow

Not included in your kit:

hot glue

Instructions:

1.  Wind the large piece of jute twine in a circle using the hot glue to keep it together.
2. Cut the shorter piece of jute twine into 2, 4-5″ pieces to make the ears.
3. Hot glue the twine for the ears to the green ribbon.  Once glue has dried, cut around the ribbon so you can’t see it from the front of the ear. 
4. Glue the ears onto the top of the twine circle.
5. Glue the white bow below one of the ears.
6. You’re done!

Greetings to all our Beavercreek patrons!

I am so grateful to be writing this blog with the sun shining into my office.  Beavercreek is beautiful in the spring! 

We have so much coming up in the next two months.  Beavercreek City School’s 2nd grade classes will all visit us in April.  We will have a booth at Spring into Adventure put on by Beavercreek Parks.  Also, you will see our librarians visit your schools in May to gear up for our Summer Reading Club starting June 1st!  I am always astounded by the classes, crafts and activities put on by our children and adult librarians.  We have so many book clubs, story times and craft sessions for our kids and some fantastic garden and musician programs coming up.  

On April 11, we will start our Plant Club for adults – you can craft and gab about new plants that you’ve found or ideas that  you have.  

On May 21, we will have Glen Helen here for their program, “Hunters of the Sky.”

I apologize for the delay in getting this month’s take and make to you.  The snowstorm plus lost packages made for a bad combination.

1 block of wood

30 nails

1 skein of red embroidery floss

1 template

Not included in your kit:

hammer

tweezers

Instructions:

1.  Center the template on the block of wood and tape it down if necessary.
2. Nail the nails into the wood where the template shows.  I used tweezers to hold the nail in place.  Be sure to leave the nail sticking out a little bit so you have something to wind the string around.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     
3. Tie a piece of embroidery floss around any nail you choose and start winding the floss around the nail heads on the outside of the heart.  Once you’ve outlined the heart, wind the string randomly around the nail heads to create a criss cross pattern.
4. When you’re satisfied with your design, cut and tie off your embroidery floss.

We have had quite the winter already and I am eager to write about programs and events happening in the next couple of months.  As I’m writing this, we are expecting anywhere from six to ten inches of snow!  Here’s hoping that they have miscalculated their estimations!  February and March are coming up next and our librarians have been hard at work to bring you some wonderful times to be a part of.  

We will have our annual Food for Fines week, February 9-15.  During this week, you can bring in any non-perishable food item and we will remove $1.00, per item, from your overdue fines.  This is a great time to look in the pantry and bring in any food that you don’t plan to use and is not expired.  We will be donating the food received from this drive to Beavercreek Fish.  We also have so much for our adults and families in February. We have a dance demonstration by Vu-Do Swing, a concert with Jim McCutcheon, a Coretta Scott King story time, and even a Storybook Ball!  Ms. Lynne has a new story time on Wednesdays and Ms. Ruth has a French class that will begin this month.  We also have three different movie nights coming up – two for adults and one for teens. 

March will also be rocking here at the Carol Graff Beavercreek Library.  We will have our Quarterly Friends of the Library Booksale from March 23 – April 3. We will have Tony Peters as our first Saturday artist.  We also are so lucky to have a selection of gardening programs offered to get us all ready for spring.

Instructions:

For the most part, I used this tutorial to make my snowman:

Upcycled DIY Snowman from Embroidery Hoops

I used the pipe cleaner to attach the two embroidery hoops together.  Then, I wrapped the shorter piece of ribbon around that area to hide the screws and pipe cleaner.  I used the longer ribbon to make the bow/scarf.

1 block of wood

1 piece of holiday themed scrapbooking paper

1 gnome beard

1 wooden gnome “nose”

Not included in your kit:

mod podge or other glue

hot glue

sandpaper (optional)

Instructions:

1.  Trace your piece of wood onto your scrapbook paper and cut out.
2.  Use mod podge or glue to glue the paper to your piece of wood.
3. (Optional) if you want to give your gnome a more rustic look, sand down the edges of the triangle and scuff up the paper around the edges.
4. Trim the beard down so that it covers only the bottom third (approximately) of the triangle.  I suggest trimming from the top of the beard (the straight edge, not the curved edge).
5. Use hot glue to attach the beard and the nose to your gnome.
6. Trim off excess beard to make it your desired length.  Give it a little brush too!

Hello everyone!

It is great to write to you all again and tell you about the awesome things we have coming up this holiday season and into the new year.  Our librarians have been working hard to give you some amazing things to help start and continue those traditions with your families each year.  First and foremost, I want to thank you all for being such great patrons to our library.  We are grateful to be able to serve you.

We have an amazing December coming up.  Our biggest event is Winter Welcome on December 12th from 5-8.  This happens at Wartinger Park and is the highlight of the season.  There will be Santa and one of his reindeer ready to meet everyone, along with Booker T. Fox from the library.  Go on a tour of the different houses and find surprises inside like cookies, crafts and games.  It truly is a wonderful night.  I will see you all there! 

Our other December events include, the 3rd annual Winter Craft-stravaganza on December 13, Holiday Crafts and Stories with Mr. Tim on December 15th, and Scary and Bright laser tag with Ms. Julie on December 20th.

In January, we have Wolf Moon Howl on the 3rd, Blue Ribbon Kitchen for our adults on the 14th, and Disgusting Critters Book Club on the 17th.
