  • As Summer Winds Down, Join us in Yellow Springs!

Welcome to the Yellow Springs Community Library Blog! The summer is winding down and fall is right around the corner, and the Yellow Spring Community Library has exciting programs planned for the late summer and early fall!  Below is an abbreviated list of some of our programs for all ages that will be offered in August and September. Please visit the main web page under Calendar and All Events for a complete listing of programs.

    • All ages of children and families are welcome to join our end of Summer Reading Club Bookmobile Party! Friday, August 1st from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM join us outside and in the meeting room!
      • We will have a wonderful time of bouncing in a bounce house, purchasing books from the bookmobile, stomping rockets, Big Jenga and Connect Four and eating yummy pretzels and slushies.
    • Baby Song and Rhyme Time will start a more formal program with Nancy Lineburgh on Wednesdays, August 13th and 20th from 1:30-11:15 AM.

      • She will enrich our time together with a musical baby time for 6 months- 3 year olds.  These Wednesdays will continue with songs, rhymes and playtime each Wednesday throughout August and September.
    • Preschool Storytime, for ages 3-5 years, will begin again on Friday, August 15th from 10:30 AM- 11:15 PM.  Our gatherings will continue each Friday through September 26th and beyond.

      • Come hear stories, rhymes, and do crafts related to themes of Back to School, Grandparent’s Day and Peace Day.
    • Afterschool Tuesday will begin on Tuesday, August 26th from 2:45- 3:45 PM.  Ages 6-12 year olds are welcome to join us for an ice cream social.

      • This will be a program to bring in a new year of learning and growing.  Each Tuesday will feature more programs full of games, arts and crafts and fun activities and presenters.
    • The Beauty of the Butterfly program is on Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 5:00pm – 6:30pm for adults.

      • Patrons will use embossing folders, die cuts, glitter, book pages, ribbon and radiant pearls to make a collection of stunning cards. This program requires patrons to register and slots fill up fast, but there will be a waiting list.
    • Starting in September, Yellow Springs Library will be offering a Zentangle Art class for adults.
      • What is Zentangle, you ask? Zentangle is an easy to learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. These patterns are called tangles and you create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, s-curves and orbs. Putting them all together culminates in Zentangle art.
      • A certified Zentangle instructor, Dione Greenberg, will be teaching the classes, which will be held monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 12:30pm – 2:00pm. (Check the calendar, as every now and then time and date will need to be changed.) All needed supplies will be available to be used during the class.

  • Express Your Creativity with us in Yellow Springs All Summer!

Hello to all Yellow Springs library lovers! Thanks so much for reading our first blog post on the new webpage. I’m excited to tell you about this year’s Summer Reading Club, with the theme of “Color Our World,” encouraging creativity, art and fun this summer. Come to the library or head over to Beanstack to sign up for reading challenges and win prizes, and check out our hefty roster of summer programs for all ages right here on this site! We’re looking forward to getting things started with our Summer Reading Club Kickoff, a library open house packed with fun activities that will mark the start of the SRC. Last year’s kickoff had the library full of excitement, and we welcome new and returning patrons of all ages to join us this time around.

This year’s Summer Reading Kickoff will be celebrated Tuesday, May 27, 2025 from 2-4 PM. We’re shaking things up a little from last year and will be celebrating primarily outside this time, with most major activities and stations located on the library patio (snacks and some activities will be in our Meeting Room). And what activities they’ll be! The fire department is bringing a truck to the library, where kids will be able to meet firefighters and yes, even get a chance at spraying the hose. There will also be snow cones, games brought from the Xenia library’s Makerspace, and—in keeping with the Summer Reading Club theme for this year—fun art projects and activities to express your creativity! A paper chain, dot marker artwork, even the colorful snacks fit the theme. While we look forward to seeing you outside, there’s always a chance of harsh weather: the rain date for our SRC Kickoff is May 29, also from 2 to 4 in the afternoon.

The fun doesn’t stop there. You can get ready for our kickoff event this month by visiting our activity for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month on May 13 at 2:45 PM, a kung fu class for youth led by grand master Sen Gao, a world champion! It’s awesomeness for ages 5+. After the kickoff, we hope to see you at all our SRC programs throughout the summer, but right away Erica Carlson will be bringing in her amazing balloons on June 3 at 2:00 PM, and many more exciting children’s events will follow! Thanks so much for reading and we hope you’re as excited as we are for Summer Reading Club at the Yellow Springs Library.

  • Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, 2023

Last night we hosted the annual GCPL volunteer dinner, and it was so nice to see everyone come together and enjoy each other’s company. We want to give another gracious thanks to all the library volunteers and acknowledge the wonderful work they do for the library and their Greene County Community!

If you’re interested in volunteering at your library, you can learn more at our site or by asking your librarian today!

  • There’s Never Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen at Your Library!

Join the Cooking Caravan for creative culinary experiences at GCPL this summer! The Caravan is a group of chefs, artists, actors, and musicians devoted to enriching health and feeding artistic hunger.

I had the chance to discuss some of the culinary programs with the Caravan’s Artistic Director John.

GCPL is excited to host a number of your Chef Battle programs! What’s the most fun part – for Caravan staff and the audience alike – of these performances and why?

First of all, we are excited to perform our Chef Battles at several Greene County community libraries this summer! The most exciting part of our Chef Battle is that we have no idea what the outcome will be. We show up with ingredients, tools, and chefs. Zero recipes, zero concepts. A few audience members are picked as sous chefs and we make something up. There’s so much fun to be had when making things up as you go along.

On your website, your mission states you feel it’s your duty to inspire and illuminate the minds of tomorrow; what is the overall message you wish you wish kids & teens to take away from a Cooking Caravan performance?

“What’s in the fridge is what’s for dinner?” We advocate to work with what you have. Whether it’s ingredients or instruments, our job is to give our participants an experience that challenges them and inspires them to continue creating. There’s also a more practical application, though. Cooking is a basic skill that every human needs to know and explore at some level. If we can open your mind to even one new ingredient, our mission is accomplished.

What should our patrons expect from your Chef Battle experiences? What should they know going in?

They should expect a healthy amount of braggadocio and shenanigans. Our environment is stripped down, but the personalities are BIG. Our chefs’ main skill is their ability to unlock the ideas of their sous chefs. The sous chefs ultimately decide what to do with the ingredients, and the chefs are there to teach the fundamentals, handle any complicated or dangerous skills, and guide the experience. There is also an announcer that keeps the most important member of the team engaged: the audience (who are also the judges)!

Anything else you wish to share with our patrons?

Our Chef Battle produces bite-sized portions for the audience to sample and judge. One chef/sous chef team will walk away victorious, but everyone will walk away entertained. We only use whole produce, seeds, oils, herbs, and spices, and sometimes grains. There is never any meat, nuts, or dairy in the ingredients. There aren’t any heated elements in the battle; it’s just raw food, simple techniques, plating, and presentation. We can’t wait to see you all this summer!

Don’t miss the Cooking Caravan at these GCPL Community Libraries:

    June 28 – Yellow Springs & Xenia
