  • June 2026: Project Linus – Dayton Chapter

    This Month’s Organization

    At Project Linus, a non-profit organization, we provide new handmade blankets to children in need. Our blankets are lovingly made by adults and children from all walks of life and many different sources. Our Mission: First, Provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” Second, provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

    The Greene County Council on Aging is dedicated to promoting independence and quality of life for Greene County, Ohio, senior citizens and their caregivers. Assistance is available to Greene County residents 60 and over and their caregivers.

    Greeting card – encouragement

    Instructions

    GCCOA supports not just senior citizens, but their caregivers as well. We would like to give GCCOA cards in which they can write encouraging messages to the caregivers they support.

    Leave the inside of the card blank.  On the outside, general encouraging sentiments can be used, including: Sending Your Strength, Your Strength Inspires Me, You Got This, Hang in There, Never Give Up, You Are Not Alone, Here For You, Wishing You Good Days Ahead, Sending You Hugs, Wishing You the Best, Wishing You Sunny Days, Hey Friend, Have a Sunshiney Day, Sunny Days Ahead, Sending Smiles, Sending Sunshine & Smiles, Hello, Flying by to Say Hi, etc.

    Cards should be peaceful or cheerful in decoration. No glitter please. Include a matching envelope (in size more than color).

  • September 2026: Greene CATS Public Transit

    Greene CATS is a county public transit system operated by the Greene County Transit Board providing safe, reliable, and accessible public transportation in close coordination with the county’s social service agencies, businesses, and local decision-makers. Funding for Greene CATS Public Transit Services comes from the following sources: Federal Transit Administration, Ohio Department of Transportation, matching grants, passenger fares, and purchased service agreements with Greene County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Greene County Department of Job and Family Services, and other agencies.

  • October 2026: Crayons to Classrooms

    For students to succeed, they must first have the tools to thrive. Crayons to Classrooms is committed to providing those tools to at-risk children in the Greater Dayton Region, including Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Warren counties. We encourage community donations while also leveraging an extensive collection of supply chain partners to secure essential school supplies at significantly reduced costs. Then, we distribute those items at no cost to teachers in our Dayton store. This committed collaboration between business leaders, individual donors and volunteers helps to assure equal access for students in our community and fuel their love of learning.

    Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton’s mission is to celebrate the lives of those we have the privilege of serving by providing superior care and superior services to each patient and family.  We are a non-profit, community-based hospice.

    Every dollar donated helps us provide superior care and services to patients and families in our communities. We offer services no other hospice can. We are dedicated to meeting the needs of our communities. Our shareholders are you – the members of the Miami Valley community who are the owners of Hospice of Dayton (with an office in Xenia) and Hospice of Butler & Warren Counties.

    The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Community Support Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides case management, food, household necessities, and emergency clothing. We also offer support groups and life education skills. The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Community Support Center is dedicated to empowering individuals and strengthening the community through information and support services, collaborative program planning, educational classes, and support groups.

    Birthday cards are for children through the “Birthday Wishes” program, so cards should be child-oriented. No glitter that might fall off, please; glitter glues/gels/pens are OK. For the hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens, all sizes (juvenile or adult) and colors are welcome.

  • Beavercreek Adult Take-and-Make: Leaf Lantern

    This month we’re making lanterns out of leaves and mason jars!

    Included in your kit:

    1 mason jar

    1 votive candle

    leaves

    2 oz. mod podge

    1 foam brush

    jute twine

    Instructions:

    1.  Prepare your leaves.  You’ll want to remove the plastic veins from the back side of the leaves.  You should also iron the leaves to make them flatter.  All of this will help the leaves stick better to the side of the mason jar.
    2. Prepare your jar.  Wash the outside of your jar with soap and water to remove any dirt of grease.  If you have any rubbing alcohol, use a cotton ball to wipe down the outside of the jar.  Again, all this is to help the leaves stick to the jar.
    3. Add your leaves.  Use a thin layer of mod podge on the side of the jar just larger than your leaf.  Wait a few minutes until it gets sticky and then add your leaf.  Continue adding leaves around the outside of the jar.
    4. Once all the leaves are added, wait for the outside to dry for 15-20 minutes.  The leaves should not be able to move.
    5. Add a generous layer of mod podge to the outside of the jar to seal in the leaves.
    6. Allow to air dry for a couple of hours until the mod podge is clear.

    That’s it!  Light your candle and enjoy!

  • Killers of the Flower Moon, Week One

    The Online Book Club, if you’ve never joined us before, is a book discussion group that takes place entirely online. Each week, I write a new blog post that talks about different aspects of the book, and you can interact directly with me and other readers by leaving your comments.     Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann follows one of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s first major homicide cases in the 1920s.

    In the 1870s, the Osage were driven from their land in Kansas onto a reservation in northern Oklahoma. Within a couple of decades, oil was discovered under their new land, and by 1921 the Osage became the richest people per capita in the world, opening the door to a series of sinister acts against them. At the center of Grann’s story is an Osage woman Mollie Burkhart, her white husband Ernest Burkhart, their families, and the Osage community. Many were targets of terror, calculated murder, and racial injustice.
