Did you enjoy the ending of the book? Did it end like you thought it would? I didn’t really know what to expect by the ending, but I really was surprised by how things wrapped up.
What did you think was more scary–the scene where Burton was infected with the virus or the part where Hall had to crawl to turn off the self-destruct feature? I was nervous for Burton when he became infected, but it seemed like they had some sort of idea of how to treat him. But, I was really, really tense when Hall was trying to turn off the self-destruct. What was the purpose of the sensors that kept shooting at him? I couldn’t believe that he was tasked with such an incredible task but then had to fight against the effects of those darts. I really don’t know how he made it to turn the key. Did you expect that he would make it?
Did you understand the explanation they ended up coming up with about how the virus affected each person? The people who had increased heart rates were able to survive. The baby was screaming and was scared to death, causing his acidity to rise. The old man was all mixed up because of the Sterno. And then, the virus mutated which allowed Burton to survive. It was all a little confusing to me. I just didn’t understand the science. I did understand that if the bomb had detonated, the virus would have been able to spread everywhere and mutate in a million different ways. So, that would have been catastrophic. I’m glad that didn’t happen.
The story ends with the virus moving across the country, but it appears to be benign and have no effects on humans. Do you think that’s really the end of the story? It seemed weird that the story was so intense and there was so much science happening, but in the end, it didn’t really matter. The organism mutated all by itself to be a harmless thing. Do you really think it’s harmless? I just felt like it was a bit of an abrupt ending.
What else in this section stood out to you? Did you find any parts hard to understand? Did you feel satisfied with the way the science was explained throughout the story?

We are so excited for our 2025 Summer Reading Club. Our annual Kick Off Party on June 2nd from 12-2pm where we’ll have games, cookies and some animal guests! Summer Reading is my absolute favorite time of the year. It is wonderful to see so many patrons and families leave with arm loads of books, movies and games.
Our theme this year is color our world. So look around the library for hints to artists and community expressions. Along with the artsy theme, we have a Color Run event at Dominick Lofino Park on June 3rd and a local artist demonstration on June 7th. We also have Train Your Dragon Day on June 13th and the adults have a Cozy Coffee Corner program on June 21st!
July will be packed as well with Stingrays at Peace Lutheran Church on July 1st. We also have a whodunit program titled, “Mona Lisa is Missing,” in this program, you have to find Miss Mona and then you can paint her yourself! (July 19) Our adults have a squeegee art program and a sewing and costuming expert here holding office hours on July 26th.
The programs I’ve listed above are just a taste of all that we have prepared for you this summer in Beavercreek. We have worked hard to make this a fun and enriching summer for all of our patrons.
Spark Place is excited to be open in our new space. You will now find us on the first floor of the newly renovated Xenia Community Library. We are happy to resume offering regular classes soon. Check out our class schedule and join us to learn a new skill!
We are now using some of our increased floor space to offer low tech STEM and maker items for the youth that visit. We have expanded our offerings of STEM projects and activities that are accessible for our younger visitors at any time.
Do you know that Spark Place offers system wide support for activities like Summer Reading Club? If you enjoy some of the window clings and signs decorating our libraries this summer, they are an example of some of the things you can make in our makerspace!
We hope you are getting as excited as we are for this year’s Summer Reading Kickoff Party in Bellbrock Park on May 31st from 10-12. Just as in past years, this event will have stations with many activities for the whole family including an exotic animal petting zoo with Jungle Island, games, our Police and Fire trucks, community partners and more surprises to come! We will also have T-shirts with this year’s theme Color Your World and new art created just for Greene County Public Library.
Then stay tuned all summer! There is a program on our calendar for nearly every day from May 31st through July 31st. We can’t wait for the SHARKS from Newport Aquarium, Creating with Clay with Carmen from Outside the Box Studio, plus Columbus Theatre, Painting with Sam or Cheryl, and fun with music, magic, and science! Our grand finale is nearly a whole week long! We have craft programs, our annual book sale with the Greene County Public Library Bookmobile, and on .July 31st we have another big event at the Parks District Headquarters with a foam party!

Welcome to the very first Fairborn Library Blog Post! I am so excited to have this space to share some of the fun and interesting things we do at the Fairborn Library.
A little about me: I’m Jessica, and I have been your Head Librarian since 2021. It’s been so fun working in Fairborn, getting involved in the community, and meeting so many of you! When I’m not at the library, my favorite hobbies are reading romance, fantasy, and literary fiction and talking about my favorite gel pens (my current obsessions are Gelly Roll pens and the Pilot Precise V5).
One more thing about me is that I know it’s only May, but I cannot stop thinking about the upcoming summer season. It’s one of my favorites because of the warm weather, sunshine, and seeing all of you at our programs and events all summer long. So, to get us started, here are 5 things you won’t want to miss this summer at the Fairborn Library:
Summer Reading Kickoff Party: Mark your calendars for our biggest event of the year! Saturday June 7 from 11am-1pm at the library. We are kicking off Summer Reading Club with a huge party with animals, caricatures, a foam pit, and more! This is possibly my favorite day of the year at the library and I can’t wait to see you there to have fun and to sign up for Summer Reading!
Free Lunch for Kids and Teens: We are once again partnering with Fairborn City Schools to be a lunch site Monday through Friday from 12:00-12:30. We are also partnering with Bread of Hope to provide free lunch on Saturdays in June and July from 12:00-1:00pm. This is a great opportunity for kids to have lunch at the library after story time or before one of our afternoon programs.
Yasu Ishida: Magic Story Artist: This is an event for ages 5-11 and it will be a storytelling show with elements of traditional Japanese theater, music, origami, and storytelling! You’ll want to be sure to register for this on our website or by talking to a librarian.
Home Food Preservation: We have a 2 part series this summer on food preservation with OSU Extension. In June, we will learn about freezing and dehydrating food and in July we will learn how to make our own sauerkraut! I am particularly excited about learning the tips and tricks on freezing and dehydrating food.
Chalk Walk: The theme of Summer Reading Club this year is Color Our World and in July we are going to take that literally! You can sign up your family, your group of friends, or yourself to decorate a sidewalk square in front of the library with chalk. We are going to create fun and colorful art for everyone to enjoy.

Stop by our newly renovated library and take a tour of all the exciting new updates! Discover our expanded children’s area, relocated makerspace, and the stunning new Xenia community mural that was specially designed by a local artist. There’s so much more to explore!
Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 10th, our grand reopening celebration! We’ll have refreshments from Glazed Donut Eatery and Frios Gourmet Pops, face painting with a local community artist, a performance by the Xenia High School Jazz Band, a special visit from the Newport Aquarium’s shark, friendly goats from GoatCountry, storytimes, and guided tours of our Library. It’s an all-day celebration you won’t want to miss!
But the fun doesn’t stop there…we’ve got an exciting summer ahead!!!
Our Summer Reading Club kicks off in June and we’re celebrating with a big party on June 9th from 3–6 p.m. Enjoy a visit from the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, get creative with sidewalk chalk art on our new patio, and dive into other hands-on art activities. And yes!—there will be popsicles!!

Hello to all Yellow Springs library lovers! Thanks so much for reading our first blog post on the new webpage. I’m excited to tell you about this year’s Summer Reading Club, with the theme of “Color Our World,” encouraging creativity, art and fun this summer. Come to the library or head over to Beanstack to sign up for reading challenges and win prizes, and check out our hefty roster of summer programs for all ages right here on this site! We’re looking forward to getting things started with our Summer Reading Club Kickoff, a library open house packed with fun activities that will mark the start of the SRC. Last year’s kickoff had the library full of excitement, and we welcome new and returning patrons of all ages to join us this time around.
This year’s Summer Reading Kickoff will be celebrated Tuesday, May 27, 2025 from 2-4 PM. We’re shaking things up a little from last year and will be celebrating primarily outside this time, with most major activities and stations located on the library patio (snacks and some activities will be in our Meeting Room). And what activities they’ll be! The fire department is bringing a truck to the library, where kids will be able to meet firefighters and yes, even get a chance at spraying the hose. There will also be snow cones, games brought from the Xenia library’s Makerspace, and—in keeping with the Summer Reading Club theme for this year—fun art projects and activities to express your creativity! A paper chain, dot marker artwork, even the colorful snacks fit the theme. While we look forward to seeing you outside, there’s always a chance of harsh weather: the rain date for our SRC Kickoff is May 29, also from 2 to 4 in the afternoon.
The fun doesn’t stop there. You can get ready for our kickoff event this month by visiting our activity for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month on May 13 at 2:45 PM, a kung fu class for youth led by grand master Sen Gao, a world champion! It’s awesomeness for ages 5+. After the kickoff, we hope to see you at all our SRC programs throughout the summer, but right away Erica Carlson will be bringing in her amazing balloons on June 3 at 2:00 PM, and many more exciting children’s events will follow!
